It was a pleasure to have a full, productive week of learning with our Roadrunners. Witnessing the energy and growth in our classrooms is a constant reminder of why our school community is so special. As we look toward the coming days, please note that there will be no school for students on Monday, February 16th, as our staff participates in professional development, nor on Tuesday, February 17th, which is reserved for Parent-Teacher Conferences. We highly encourage you to bring your students along to these meetings; including them in the dialogue regarding their academic progress fosters a wonderful sense of ownership and accountability. We look forward to welcoming all students back to the building on Wednesday, February 18th.

In addition to our academic focus, Watterson takes immense pride in celebrating Black History Month throughout February. We believe in honoring this month through diverse and engaging activities, and this year we are including a classroom door decorating contest. This initiative allows our students to visually explore and showcase the significant contributions of Black leaders and historical milestones.

We would love to invite our parent community to be a part of this creative process. If you are interested in assisting a teacher with their door display, please reach out to me or the classroom teacher directly via email. We would be happy to coordinate a designated time on Monday or Tuesday for you to come in and help bring these educational tributes to life. Volunteers are based on first come, first served basis. Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our school’s vibrant culture.

Some of our 5th-grade students recently had the invaluable opportunity to learn firsthand about the firefighting profession from two of Louisville’s own. The presenters shared captivating insights into the daily life of a first responder, while also highlighting the profound legacy of the city’s first Black firefighters. This presentation offered a unique bridge between local history and career exploration that deeply resonated with our students. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Watterson PTA for organizing such a meaningful and impactful learning experience for our students.
