Message from Principal Smith

Dear Farnsley Families,

I hope you’re having a wonderful week! Our students have been highly engaged in learning across all grade levels, and it’s inspiring to see their curiosity and effort in action each day. As we move into the next few weeks, I want to highlight the importance of our upcoming MAP assessments. These tests provide valuable insight into each student’s academic growth and help us tailor instruction to meet their individual needs. Please encourage your child to do their best and get plenty of rest before testing days. Reading MAP testing will take place first thing in the morning on November 18th, with Math MAP testing taking place first thing in the morning on November 20th.

A quick reminder: families of incoming 6th graders should complete their middle school applications, and current 8th graders should apply for high school by December 19. If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to your child’s grade-level counselor for support.

We’re also looking forward to our Fall Dance on November 12 from 5:00–7:00 PM! This event is a great way for students to celebrate their hard work and enjoy time with friends. To attend, students must meet the following criteria:

-No unfulfilled discipline matters

-No more than two unexcused absences or tardies

-No referrals resulting in ISAP or suspension

-Passing all classes during Term 2

We are also launching our annual Food Drive, beginning today and running through November 21. Students may bring canned food or other unexpired non-perishable items and turn them in to their Genius Hour or Zero Hour teacher. Your donations directly support families in our community as we move into the holiday season.

Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to our school community. Together, we’re making great strides toward student success!

Warm regards,
Carolyn B Smith
Principal, Farnsley Middle School

Attendance Reminders

Did you know that students must be in their first class no later than 8:40 am each day?  Most students take about 5-minutes to get settled in their lockers and make it on time.

-Students who enter the building BEFORE or BY 8:40 am are allowed to head to their lockers and get settled into class, though, if they arrive between 8:35 and 8:40, they are likely to receive a mark on their Wildcat Cards for being Tardy to Class... not to school.  These repeated marks on their Wildcat Card will result in progressive discipline for infractions such as tardiness to class, disruptive behavior, dress code violations, etc.

-Students who enter the building AFTER 8:40 must sign in Tardy to School.  This is reflected via Infinite Campus and repeated/excessive tardies can accumulate and will result in an absence to school.

-We understand that families use multiple means to attend to school daily but consider ensuring your child arrives to school with adequate time, especially if their normal route is delayed.

-As a school, we are charged with reducing chronic absenteeism by 3% as compared to last year.  If everyone does a little, it will make a big difference!

-For more details, take a look at our Student Attendance Action Plan; it gives a detailed explanation of the attendance/tardy policy.

Thank you for your attention to these details and partnering with us to address these concerns.

Explore Spotlight: 6th grade Healthcare Science & 7th grade Business

Our 6th grade Healthcare Science students have been diving into the fascinating world of the human skeletal system! As part of their study, students demonstrated impressive creativity and collaboration by designing and building detailed skeletal models using modeling clay. This hands-on project served as their summative assessment and showcased not only their understanding of bone structure and function but also their artistic skills and problem-solving abilities. Engagement was high as students brought science to life—quite literally—through their colorful and creative creations!

Our 7th grade Business students have started to channel their inner entrepreneurs with an exciting project—creating their own unique cereal brands! As part of this hands-on unit, students are designing new cereal concepts, crafting eye-catching box models, and developing detailed marketing plans to promote their products. Engagement is sky-high as students combine creativity, design, and business strategy to bring their cereal ideas to life. We’re so proud of their innovation and teamwork!

ELA & Math Spotlight: MAP Testing: Partnering for Student Growth

ALL Students will take their Winter MAP tests on November 18th and 20th. Please ensure that your student has gotten a good night sleep, eaten breakfast and understands the importance of this assessment.

As we approach our next round of MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing, we encourage all families to take a few minutes to talk with their children about their current MAP scores and goals for growth. These assessments are an important tool that help us understand each student’s learning progress and guide instruction to meet their individual needs.

When students know their goals and feel supported at home, they are more motivated to do their best. Please help us by encouraging your child to take their time, stay focused, and show what they know. Use the tables to the right to talk with your students about where they are and what steps they need to take to reach their goals. Together, we can help every student reach new heights in their learning!
